Widely regarded as ‘Best President Ever’, Lincoln led the United States to defeat the Confederacy and following his Emancipation Proclamation, was enabled to abolish slavery. Saving the Union and freeing the slaves, his achievements assured his legacy. In his Gettysburg Address, he defined the Civil War as a re-dedication to the ideals in the Declaration of Independence. He was assassinated in 1865. The killing of progressive thinkers and civil rights leaders has been a tragedy for many eras. From Lincoln through John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcom X. to John Lennon, the true American Dream is a torch that will never die, but always be passed on to those with the strength to carry that light.
